Mulholland Drive is volgens filmrecensenten de beste film van de 21ste eeuw. De vroeg 177 recensenten uit 36 landen naar hun favoriete moderne film. Het surrealistische meesterwerk van David Lynch kwam op de eerste plaats, gevolgd door In the Mood for Love van Wong Kar-Wai en There Will Be Blood. Elke recensent kon tien films insturen. Dat resulteerde in bijna 600 films. Er is geen ruimte voor de grootste kaskrakers als The Hobbit of Pirates of the Caribbean, wel voor andere succesfilms als The Wolf of Wall Street en Moulin Rouge.
